What can you feed stinky little thief ? That’s a frequently asked (and with reason) question. Ferrets have a pretty strict food diet, since they are obligate carnivores. What does obligate carnivore mean ? It means, that your ferret can only and only process meat. In this article, you will learn a little more on the different ways of feeding your ferret, as well as learning about the pros and cons of every option.
What is ‘’obligate carnivore’’
Obligate carnivore means that ferrets CAN’T eat other thing than meat. It’s not that the food won’t give then any nutrients, it means that eating other things meat can be harmful for them. Here are some examples of what certain common aliments can do to them :
- Onion and garlic : Makes them sick or kills them.
- Chocolate and caffeine : Can cause kidney and liver damage.
- Dairy products : Ferrets can’t digest lactose, it’s the same as being lactose intolerant. Causes diarrhea and dehydration.
- Avocado and grapes : Can cause kidney failure
- Sugar: Cause hypoglycemia and a severe decrease in energy levels
You ferret is not aware of that, and will eat whatever comes in his way. They absolutely love everything that you eat. Don’t succumb to the tentation, never feed them human food. Yes, even if they are really cute when they ask for food !
When and how much to feed your ferret ?
Ferrets have a really fast metabolism (About 3 hours. Us hooman have a 24 hours metabolism). That means that they will eat 8 to 10 small quantities of food per day. Have you ever wondered why your ferret poops so many times per day ? That’s why ;). Also, you have to regulate how much food you give them, because they will eat nonstop if you always give them food when their bowl is empty. Our older ferret, Coconut, got fat because we gave him too much food. Your ferret need between 200 to 300 kcal per day per kilo.
Dry food
Dry food is a good option for your ferret, since it’s easy to feed them with it. Still, it is not the best option. If you want to feed your ferret with dry food, you have to read the ingredients first, because in some countries, ferret food is not regulated for their needs. Your ferret’s food need to be proteined and have less possible amount of fiber and carbohydrates in it. If you don’t have the money for ferret dry food, it’s ok to give them cat dry food, but you must give them supplements such as salmon oil and eggs to fit their needs. Personally, we opted for that option, since we are students and we have a limited budget.
Raw food
Definitely the best option, but you need to know how to do it. There are three ways to feed your ferrets raw food. The first one is with only meat, but we do not recommend it, because it will cause deficiency, due to the lack of nutrients present in bones. The second way is the raw meat and bones diet, also commonly called the ‘’BARF diet’’. Since ferrets will normally eat their whole prey in the wild, you have to feed them bones if you want to give them raw meat. The third way is the whole prey diet. It’s the equivalent of the BARF diet, but it may disgust you. With this diet, you can feed mouses and chicks to your ferrets. Raw food may be the best option for your ferret, but there are some things to take in consideration if you choose to do that. There are risks of bacteria or parasites that may be present in raw diets. Make sure to stick with high quality sources of food. As an example, a company that is specialised in raw food for animals ! Another thing to look out for is that your ferret might hide the food somewhere and eat it later when it’s spoiled. Make sure you supervise your ferret when he eats !
Treats and supplements
Ferrets can be capricious, they won’t like every treat you give them. But if you try enough, you will surely find one your ferret loves! First of all, never give your ferret cat treats, they are not adapted to your ferret needs. You can find ferrets treats at your pet shop and online. Something to keep in mind is that you can’t overfeed your ferret with treats, they should stay below 10% of their total alimentation. Here is a list of uncommon treats that your ferret may like !
- Pumpkin soup : one of the only vegetable your ferret can eat. It is good for hairballs and they absolutely love it because it’s sugary. Max once or twice a week and in small quantities, if not it can lead to adrenal diseases.
- Raw eggs : a perfect protein supplement for your ferret if you choose to feed them with dry food.
- Salmon oil : contains essential oils and fats for your ferrets, also a good supplement if you feed them with dry food.
- Beer yeast : good for their hair !
What treats NOT to give your ferret
- Peanut butter : They love the taste, but it’s bad for them
- Vitamin paste : You can often see videos of people giving vitamin paste to their ferrets. We have vitamin paste at home and we give it to our ferrets only when we give them a bath, and in a really small quantity.
- Vegetables and fruits : Not good ! Don’t !
Feeding your ferret correctly is the best way to show them that you love them. It will also allow to live longer and to be happier. We hope that this guide helped you know more about your fur noodle alimentation, don’t be scared to leave us a comment !
